Crunch Time at the BBC Good Food Show!
Monday 11th December 2006
The Great British Carrots Campaign enjoyed its first public outing at the BBC Good Food Show, the country’s largest consumer food event, last week. The show, held at Birmingham’s NEC and touted as ‘the foodie event of the year’, opened its doors to 135,000 people from 22nd – 25th November.
The campaign, launched this year and already showing noticeable results for the industry, was represented with a stand in the Red Tractor pavilion, promoting British food and farming. It was manned by a stalwart group of the BCGA members, keen to meet the public and gain some feedback on their product first hand. Samples of fresh British carrots flew off the stand, with the public crunching through a total of 50 kgs over the five days, with many people commenting on their sweetness and coming back for more, obviously pleased to have a healthy snack on offer!
A set of four recipe cards was created for the show, and was eagerly received by consumers keen for inspiration on how to enjoy the versatility of carrots. The set comprised Easy Ways with Carrots, Carrots for Foodies, Carrots for Christmas and Carrots for Families, offering something for everyone, and 40,000 cards were distributed.
Rachel Green cooked daily in the Great British Food Theatre, compered by food writer Thane Prince, demonstrating to a packed audience the versatility and deliciousness of the carrot. The recipes included a quick and easy Beef Stir Fry with Crispy Carrots, to a Festive Pan Fried Turkey with Carrots, Lime and Ginger, and even a quick Carrot Christmas Pudding, designed to inspire time pressed cooks who had not yet embarked on this year’s pudding.
The campaign is now about to enter its second year, with a series of new initiatives for 2007 to support the Great British Carrot!
